Instrument, Sculpture, Openformance, Hyperformer
by Sebastian Gonzalez Dixon
Momentum is an electronic, sonic, and visual instrument activated by the inertia of its movement when manipulated by a performer-user. This tubular object, of significant size and weight, is equipped with sensors and transmitters linked to a synthesis system that generates real-time audio and video signals based on the object’s movements during its interaction with the user. The immersive installation invites the audience to manipulate, dance, and engage in a dialogue with the sculptural object, generating spontaneous interpretations and creating what the author has termed an Openformance.
Scientifically, momentum is the physical quantity that measures the amount of motion of an object and is calculated based on its weight and velocity. In Momentum, this concept is manifested when the user sets the instrument in motion, challenging its inertia and entropy. The user’s interaction with the instrument generates an audiovisual response that stimulates participation, curiosity, and creativity. This feedback loop drives the performer, in their continuous movement, to gain creative momentum, discovering unique patterns and nuances in their interpretation.
